Five Surprising Celebrity Children's Book Authors

Many famous individuals have talents that many may not be aware of. There are several celebrity children's book authors who may totally surprise their fans. Knowing how to switch gears and take on a very different task is a notable skill. The volumes of these stories sold can be higher than normal sales because of the big names behind them but many avid readers do not realize they even exist.

Actress Jamie Lee Curtis has written several books for youngsters, including "Today I Feel Silly, " "Other Moods That Make My Day, " "Tell Me Again About the Night I Was Born, " and "Where Do Balloons Go?." She has two children that these stories were written for and Curtis uses the same illustrator, Laura Cornell, for all of her published stories.

Dolly Parton, country and western singer, took one of her most famous songs, "Coat of Many Colors, " and converted into a delightful children's story, complete with artistic illustrations. The story is of a little girl from a poor family in Tennessee who has no coat to wear. Her mother makes one for her from various colors of scraps and rags. When the child goes to school in her newly sewn creation, the children mock and make fun of her. She ends the story by telling them how rich she is in that beautiful garment that her mother made just for her.

James Patterson is very well-known as an adult author but he has begun producing middle school stories that the age group absolutely loves. Beginning with "Middle School: The Worst Years of My Life, " this series is all about what growing up is is like in this age range. Patterson's works have been on the New York Times bestseller list several times and he has won the Children's Choice Book Awards in 2011 and 2012.

Famous country singer and writer, Tim McGraw, has penned two heart-warming books for his young daughter. "My Little Girl" was his first and depicts a daughter's day with her dad. The second, "Love Your Heart, " is about the act of being kind to others.

Movie star and top model, Brooke Shields, surprised everyone with her exemplary writing skills in her debut book, "Welcome to Your World, Baby." This colorful story is about a young girl who becomes a new big sister to an infant. She is very helpful and attentive to the new arrival and thinks about how much fun it is going to be when the baby is older.

Who would have thought that Madonna, the flamboyant rock star who sang "Like a Virgin" and the hit "Material Girl, " would pen storybooks for children. A highly unlikely author, she has written several stories including "The Adventures of Abdi" and "Mr. Peabody's Apples." Her works contain positive messages for children and portray subtle life lessons.

Even though all of the proceeding authors made it big in other areas, these individuals do seem to have many skills and they deserve all the recognition they can get for taking the time to produce works for youngsters. For many, it is far removed from their original careers and it is a surprising, but touching move for them to take on this literary task.
