By Kerri Stout

Science fiction is a popular style of writing that involves made up stories that are not based on factual or real events. Typically these involve settings in the future and science components, as well as space, technology, time travel and extraterrestrials. Sci fi novels might be called lit of ideas because it is so involved with exploring the possibilities of modern and future innovations. Writers of this genre might also explore morality, desire, identity, social structure and politics.

No single definition is used to describe this kind of writing. It includes numerous themes and sub-genres. Sci fi literature is often considered to be rational writing about fantasized futures that could actually occur in reality.

This is similar to the genre of fantasy, in some ways. However, it is different in that its imaginary components are actually possible based on scientific laws. There are some instances in which the elements of these sci fi books are pure imagination and have no scientific basis.

Typically these novels are set during a time in the future. They might also have a historical setting that contradicts what readers know to be true based on real historical facts and records. Many of these also include settings in outer space, outside worlds or subterranean Earth. A variety of characters may be found in these stories, including mutants, aliens, humanoid robots, androids and more.

The characters may use technology that readers can imagine, such as teleportation devices, ray guns and even computers. Certain scientific principles, new or contradictory, may be used in these novels. Examples of these might be faster-than-light communication and travel or wormholes. Varying and new kinds of political and social systems may be found in these story lines too.

Characters found in these fictional stories usually have a paranormal ability. They may be involved with mind control, teleportation, telekineses and even telepathy. Typically the settings are in other dimensions or universes. The storyline might even involve traveling between these various dimensions and universes. Many components are linked to sci fi literature, which dates back centuries.

There are many sub-genres, categories and related genres to be discussed when considering this style of writing. This type of literature is usually regarded as hard SF or soft SF. Hard SF refers to that which puts emphasis on getting accurate details, particularly when it comes to natural sciences. These may come close to describing potential realities that could come of advanced technology. There have been instances in which these literary predictions have come to pass. Then there is SF that is focused primarily on social science, which includes economics, psychology, political science, anthropology and sociology.

Time travel, apocalyptic, social science fiction, alternative history, post-apocalyptic, superhuman and military SF are several examples of sub-genres associated with this kind of writing. There are also many genres that are similar, such as horror fiction, mystery, fantasy, science fantasy and ci-fi. Many around the globe are fans of this style of literature and there are many authors who publish works within the genre.
