How To Become A Grant Writer

By Shirley Graham

When looking to raise funds, companies, organizations, foundations and universities often use contract or temporary employees. In doing so, an entity only has to pay for a grant writer during the process. Whereas, a permanent employee often receives benefits which can often be costly to employers. As a result, it is now a preference of many of these entities to use only contractual personnel.

Once hired, most writers work to complete an application process for funding an organization, university or event. Other entities which apply for and use these type resources are government departments, corporations, foundations and trusts. These type applications are often referred to as "submissions, " or "proposals." Most often, these documents need be submitted on or before any deadline for best results.

It is important when working in this area to know the subject matter. By knowing the objective, individuals can write to a targeted audience which is more likely to donate time or money. As a result, writers who target a specific audience with important information often have the best results.

When an entity or writer locates the proper audience, it is important to convey information in a way that is easy to understand. Once an audience is identified, the writer can then gather more information related to how the audience has reacted to previous request. In doing so, it can be easy to identify those who have given the most towards fund raising in the past.

Whatever the case, most of these individuals create proposals for various type of research. While some may work for universities, others may work for non-profits like the American Cancer Society. The best writers often have a combination of skills which include creativity, grammar, spelling and research. For those who need help, there are a number of free online courses which offer refresher courses in English composition, grammar and spelling.

Individuals have often found that guidelines can vary widely. As a result, it is often best to ask if there are specific guidelines before beginning each project. Whether related to formatting, subject matter or writing, there are often differences. As a result, while some templates can be used, most often each request will involve new and different information.

It is also important to notify an employee when something is wrong with any aspect of the process. Whether that be related to behavior, composition, deadlines or other issues, it is impossible for an employee to remedy an issue without knowing there is a problem. After which, if the problem continues, then the employer must decide the best course of action. In some cases, this may be probation, others termination.

There are also a number of individuals who do this work either full or part-time from home. To so, it is important to have a dedicated work-space, proper computer and internet set-up and flexible schedule. Working from home can be great for parents, students and retirees among others. It is important that anyone doing so have a strong sense of self-control. Otherwise, important deadlines can pass which can sometimes result in an entity not receiving a much needed grant.
