Healing And Growing With Self Help Literature

By Alison Wilcox

There is no perfect human being. Everyone is marked with weaknesses and deficiencies that they wish they could conquer. It could be losing weight, accepting and healing the outcome of a tragic event, gaining self-awareness and esteem, patching up failing relationship and many other possible challenges. Self help literature can be a valuable, helpful companion when one is on a journey of healing and self discovery.

Counselors are taught to win patients over and help them work through their pains and struggles. For some people, confiding deep seated and painful issues is very difficult. Others report that they do not feel that they are better off even after long term therapy. There is also the challenge of substantiating how successful a counselor is in terms of the patients that they have cured.

With self-help books, you can get a clue as to the value of a book through book reviews. Bestselling titles that sell millions of copies must have some practical and helpful advice. Another advantage with books is that you can go over something as many times as you want to or need to, coming out with new insights each time.

Such books are a section of the larger self-help industry that is worth over 10 billion dollars in the US. The industry includes infomercials, CDs, holistic centers, retreats and seminars.

Aside from book reviews, the value of inspirational books can be gauged from the author. Those that are most helpful are those penned by licensed medical professionals and clergy. Such information can be found on the book with usually carries an author bio and also on the websites of the author and publisher. It is in fact important to carry out such checks to be sure that you are picking a book that addresses the challenges you want to overcome.

No form of art lacks critics and the inspirational books do have their fair share of them. Their opinion is that the books do leave readers a sense of inspiration and faith which does get them off the edge if they were on the verge of taking desperate measures. Their point of criticism is that no significant improvement in their lives past this. Readers remain hopeful but they do not work through their issues to overcome them completely.

There is one perpetual truth and it is that work must be done to achieve the objectives they have for engaging a counselor or picking up a self-help book. Without doing so, no real change will be seen. The best books are those that have practical exercises and tasks to be completed at the end of each section or chapter. Keeping a daily journal is another way to monitor your progress.

Self help literature is like a confiding in a friend who understands your problems and who will steer you through it. This is a friend you can be sure will keep your secrets and who will have infinite patience when you need to go something over and over again. This is a friend who will be there with you as you work your way through to regain esteem, acceptance, understanding, awareness and a large dose of respect and appreciation of yourself and everyone else.
