How Do Serial Killer Minds Work?

By Wanda Vaughn

Luckily there are not that many people who commit multiple murders, but when this heinous crime occurs it is something that is always shocking. Nobody can quite understand how another human being can commit this type of atrocity. One of the most common questions asked is how do serial killer minds work.

Then there is the question of whether or not it is easy to spot a person who is prepared to kill many times. Although a lot of people would like to think they could identify this kind of killer without too much difficulty, the truth is probably somewhat different. These killers can look and sound just like everyone else.

However this is merely a facade and enables them to stalk their victims without attracting attention. This type of person often lacks empathy and is unable to comprehend how a normal person thinks and feels. They learn how to behave through watching others, and how to manipulate other people through observation.

It is not uncommon for these killers to act as if they are someone completely different. They may almost seem as if they are acting a part in a film. The murderer may seem as if they are part of the community, but will always be on the fringes looking in.

Those who lack the ability to hold down these types of positions can often pretend they are the very model of authority through dressing up as people the public automatically trust. This helps them to speak to their victims more easily. People who may naturally be wary will automatically assume they are trustworthy.

Serial killers are psychopaths and their minds work in a completely different way from that of the normal human being. They cannot comprehend it is wrong to kill. They cannot understand why other people cannot comprehend their urge to kill or that it is wrong to take in life simply because they feel like it.

While most normal people will briefly feel like killing someone who may have upset them or subjected them to some sort of trauma they quickly get over these impulses. The ordinary person has learned to control these impulses and has learned the morals that prevent them from taking out their anger and aggression on others. In contrast a psychopath may wish to stop killing but somehow lacks the ability to do so.

While the name for this particular group of killers may be a modern invention, they have been around for a very long time in one guise or another. There is plenty of evidence for this in the history books as well as in literature that was written centuries ago. It is difficult to see how this trait could ever be completely eradicated.

A quick perusal of popular books will show serial killer minds have been around for a very long time. In fact it is nothing new to find a person who can behave perfectly normally on the outside while masking a hideously unacceptable personality on the inside. It is a subject that fascinates a lot of people but which also produces a feeling of horror and revulsion.
