Characteristics Of A Good Christian Novelist

By Ines Brennan

There are many people out there who dream of becoming an author. While anyone can write a book, this does not necessarily mean that it will become an instant best seller. There are too many authors out there and too many novels for an amateur work to stand out. An aspiring Christian novelist will need to do a number of things to achieve success.

All writers will need to be highly proficient in the language they have chosen to write in. When one writes, one will have to consider grammar, sentence construction, and other aspects of the language to ensure that he is getting his message across. A mastery of the language is necessary for expressing oneself.

One will have to be imaginative if one wants to produce a novel. There are many topics to choose from but if you really want to stand out, you will have to produce something original. With the huge number of books that have been written before, you will need to be creative to generate fresh material for your readers.

Any author can benefit from reading other books. This could help him come up with ideas of his own. This is also one way of learning what other materials there are out in the market so you can create something that will stand out. When you are reading a novel, you can observe what kept you hooked to the story.

The author will need research skills so he could make his characters and the rest of the story as close to reality as possible. Whatever topic he has chosen to write about, he will need to understand its basic concepts. If he has used some of his research for his book, then the writer must give credit where it is due.

He must also have a good understanding of his target audience. One needs to understand what the readers are like so that one can anticipate their reactions. When you understand your readers, you know what would appeal to them and what would not. You can create a story that will interest them and make them react.

One must also be prepared for the amount of work that is to be done. Even if you have not been asked to write a book, one must constantly practice. Writing when you can will hone your skills. Sometimes this can be pretty hard to do especially when you have a block. One must be persistent if one wants to be an exceptional author.

Being professional is part of the bargain. When one has commitments, one must honor these. If there are deadlines, then one must provide the material on time. Moreover, you should learn what you can about the publishing industry so you can take advantage of opportunities. Take your writing seriously so your work will also be taken seriously.

Just because one can write does not mean that one has what it takes to become a recognized Christian novelist. There is a lot of work, research and practice that are involved when one wants to become a professional. An author will have to understand his audience and have mastery over the language. One must foster creativity and be persistent in writing new material.
