Getting Your Child To Look At Science Fiction Books For Teens

By Maryanne Goff

Reading is something that not enough children around the world get to do. Parents have a wide choice these days from thousands of titles and formats to read novels on. What about those who hate reading? How do you encourage them to read science fiction books for teens, or any book for that matter?

These days it's very important that kids read novels, because if they do not read the chances are that will be overtaken by kids that do. Reading is said to boost a person's IQ and make them more eloquent. But what if they are not readers? Then they'll need a little encouragement.

Kids that like to read as teens are normally those who read a lot as smaller children. Some children need to be encouraged but the good news is that these days there are many books for teenagers and many formats to choose from. If you have the type of child that's more comfortable reading from a screen than a book, then you're in luck. More eBooks are being published for children than ever before.

If you're attempting to get them reading science-fiction, try and start by watching things about space, or sci-fi programs. There's even a whole channel dedicated to it. They might be interested in aliens, in space travel and life on other planets. If this is too big a step try getting a graphic novel or perhaps a comic book based on one of the popular superheroes, as these deal with issues in many sci-fi novels.

By taking them along to the local library you'll hopefully get them to choose a novel that they'll actually read. It's a good idea not to choose a really long one, perhaps choose one that takes just a few hours to read. The stories in these are usually faster than the longer novels and can be finished the same day. If you can't get to the library then try searching online. But be specific when searching. You'll probably find plenty of stories and novels, some of which are free.

If you're after quality and not quantity, try scouring the best seller lists on specialists websites. Most sites will have generic best seller lists but the better ones should also have specific lists, tailored toward niche markets. If you look closely at books aimed at their age group you should find something in there to interest him. Also look out for free novels, as the quality of these can be very good. Conversely, sometimes the quality is poor, with typos and grammatical errors.

One thing that you could do is stick to an author once your child has found one that they like. It's not easy to read a novel by a new author because you're not always sure you want to invest the time. So when you find one they like, look for other books by them.

Science Fiction Books For Teens are pretty easy to find, but finding the right author and right stories is sometimes more of a challenge. Find out if they like adventure tales, hard sci-fi, time-travel or dystopian fiction. The more they read the more they will use their imagination and hopefully get more creative in other pursuits.
