Mormon Poems And The Culture Of Latter Day Saints

By Irma Farrell

Mormon poems are usually about spiritual topics or themes that are mostly written by the members of LSD Church, or the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints. The Church has been established in the start of the nineteenth century have composing poetry since then. This art form is said to reach out to the Spirit.

The Elders Journal, which was published in 1838 in Far West, has a tribute John Marsh in a form of a beautiful poem. The author of O, My Father which is Eliza Snow and author of The Spirit of God who is Phelps are some of the early known Mormon poets who are significant in their crafts. David Wright and John Talbot are some of the significant contemporary poets.

It was noted that their literature started long before The Book of Mormon was mass produced. Over the years, they grew to include history, fiction, biographies, hymns, drama and others. They are the principal part of the Latter Day Saints Church.

It began in New York during the 1820s through the visions of Joseph Smith. Today they are understood to be members of LDS Church, but some of them are either not practicing the religion or independent from the church. They value their family, traditions and religion very much.

The religion had strong similarities with nineteenth century Protestant Christianity. Mormons not only practice baptism and celebrate the Eucharist, but they also participate in religious rituals unknown to the traditional Christians. They believe that God, through Smith and his successors, restored these truths and restored the original Christianity taught by Jesus Christ.

They used to practice polygamy or plural marriage which Smith has established in Nauvoo, but was opposed by the US congress. The practice was officially abolished by Wilford Woodruff in his 1980 manifesto. They are identified as Christians though some of their beliefs differ from the mainstream Christianity.

Other than the Bible, they also believe in other scriptures such as The Book of Mormon. It is a sacred text the contains writing of prophets who live the American continent from 2200 BC to AD 421. The book was published on March 1830 by Joseph Smith. It also contains several passages not found in all other scriptures such as the redemption from death and eschatology.

The materialization of Jesus in the American continent after his resurrection is a pivotal situation in the book. Much like the Bible, it is divided into small books with the name of the author as titles and it has chapters and verses. It was first promulgated in English, but has been interpreted 108 other languages today.

When writing what they consider as a Mormon literature, the scope is not limited to spiritual themes. There are many authors who have penetrated the main audience, like Stephanie Meyer and Orson Scott Card who penned the Twilight series and the Enders Game, respectively. Mormon poems and literature are just like any other form of art in this world.
